Legacy gift continues to support women in Higher Education
A scholarship established in memory of maths teacher Jean Crawford Cochrane continues to support women from Northern Ireland in their undergraduate study at Queen¡¯s.
The Jean Crawford Cochrane scholarship helps many women continue their higher education which may otherwise be limited by financial constraints.
While Jean did not study at Queen’s, she was a strong advocate for women’s education and an active member of Queen’s Women Graduates Association.
She spent her career as a teacher, head teacher and representative of the National Association of Head Teachers.
The annual scholarship was founded by Frances Grant, Jean’s adopted granddaughter and executrix, following a bequest in her Jean's will.
Commenting on the impact of the scholarship for women today, scholarship founder Frances Grant said: “Jean Crawford Cochrane, my adopted grandmother, shaped my belief that education is freedom. Through her stories of learning, of limits placed on women, and of a life lived with curiosity and resolve she taught me that opportunity must be fought for and shared. For her, education was not simply knowledge, but freedom - the key to independence, opportunity, and change.
“This scholarship has been created in her name to honour her belief that education opens doors, and to ensure that young women are given not only access to opportunity, but the confidence to pursue it fully. In continuing her legacy, we take another step toward removing the barriers she spent a lifetime pushing against.”
The scholarship will provide financial support of £2,000 per year to an undergraduate student over the course of their studies.
Jean Crawford Cochrane’s lasting legacy reflects her dedication to advancing educational opportunities for women and will continue to support future generations of female students at Queen’s.
Applications are now open and will close on Friday 1 May 2026 at 5pm.
