National Trust Time and Space Winner

Award Empowers MAE Student to Bridge the Gap for Visually Impaired Students in STEM

Abi Way - National Trust Time and Space (Science) winner 2024

Meet our final-year BEng student, Abi Way, who recently won the prestigious National Trust Time and Space, Science Award!

This prestigious award provides winners with the time, resources, and guidance needed to bring their ground breaking ideas to life, spanning fields such as science, nature and climate, society, and art and culture.

As part of the prize, Abi will receive mentorship from the renowned Dame Maggie Aderin-Pocock.

Abi's award-winning idea? To close the gap for visually impaired (VI) and blind children by establishing a charity and support network. Her initiative will offer real-world opportunities and mentorship to under-18 students in mainstream education, helping them engage with STEM through tailored mentoring programs, events, and activities.

Inspired by her own experiences, Abi has witnessed first hand the lack of support for VI and blind students in the current education system—whether it’s reading beaker measurements in chemistry or using calculators. We look forward to following Abi's journey.
