Dr Jon Silversides Personal Profile

As Associate Director for the NI Clinical Research Facility (CRF), my role is focussed on growing and supporting investigator-led research in Northern Ireland. This includes supporting clinicians to deliver multicentre trials in the context of clinical practice, but also in bringing together clinical expertise, research expertise and resources to develop and deliver clinical trials led from Northern Ireland, matched to the needs of our patients.

Research Focus

Dr Jon Silversides is a practicing ICU Consultant, whose research interests span critical care and perioperative medicine. He has a particular interest in the effects of fluid therapy in sepsis and other critical illnesses, and is involved in experimental medicine studies and clinical trials in this area.  Within perioperative medicine, his focus is on clinical trials to investigate the impact of anaesthesia-related interventions on longer term patient-centred outcomes.

Dr Silversides is Chief Investigator for SINFONIA (), an NIHR HTA-funded 2500-patient trial comparing sugammadex with neostigmine for prevention of post-operative pulmonary complications.  He also leads an intervention arm studying conservative fluid management and deresuscitation within SepTIC (), an NIHR HTA-funded trial investigating multiple interventions in critically ill patients with sepsis.

Regional and National Roles

Dr Silversides is clinical lead for Critical Care and Perioperative Medicine within the Northern Ireland Clinical Research Network, and represents Northern Ireland in National Specialty Groups for Critical Care and for Anaesthesia, Perioperative Medicine and Pain. 

Dr Silversides co-ordinates the ‘Research Leaders’ scheme for early career researchers within the Royal College of Anaesthetists Centre for Research and Improvement; and is on the Executive Committee of the Irish Critical Care Trials Network and the board of the UK Critical Care Research Group. He is chair of the Research Regional Pathway Council for ENCOMPASS.
