Stand Alone Module | Nursing

Advancing the Speciality of Orthopaedic and Fracture Trauma Nursing

LEVEL OF STUDY : 7 - postgraduate level

Module code: HSN 7120

This theory-based online module aims to build upon the registered nurse’s existing knowledge and skill set within orthopaedic and fracture trauma nursing. It will provide the student with an opportunity to critically explore pertinent issues within national and international health care systems and wider context of the person’s lifespan, individual healthcare needs whilst reflective of equality, diversity and inclusion.

Stand Alone modules give the applicant an opportunity to:

  • Return to study
  • Update in a new field of practice
  • Further develop knowledge and skills in the current area of practice

On successful completion of the module the participant will be awarded CATs points, which may count towards another award. Students may access a number of Stand Alone modules offered within a variety of nursing programmes. The modules may stipulate that participants must be working in a relevant clinical environment. 

Please note that courses are subject to a minimum registration, so it may not be possible to run all courses each year.

Entry Requirements

Typically applicants must hold a minimum of a BSc Hons 2:1 degree as well as a professional registration in nursing with a recognised organisation such as the Nursing and Midwifery Council. Applicants with a BSc Hons 2:2 (or equivalent qualification acceptable to the University) will be considered on a case-by-case basis. All applicants must have a minimum of one year’s postgraduate clinical experience and be working in a relevant area, where orthopaedic and fracture trauma nursing care can be delivered across the person’s lifespan. The Programme

  • Course Content

    Discourse will be used to explore the current evidence base of significant issues which relate to practice and impact on the patient's experience and outcome of care. Senior UK health professionals within education and clinical practice will be invited to deliver and facilitate the student’s teaching and learning. 

  • Outcomes

    This stand alone module is worth 20 CATs points. Where a clinical skills component is included, there may be a requirement for support and supervision of an experienced practitioner within the student’s clinical area.

  • Selection Criteria

    Applicants must hold at least a degree for entry to Level 7 (postgraduate level) study. Applicants who do not meet the entry requirements should contact the School for advice.

    International Trained Nurses/Midwives: If you hold an international qualification you will need to provide a UK ENIC Statement of Comparability. This should be obtained prior to submitting your application. You can apply for a statement through the ENIC website:      

    Students accessing this stand alone module must work in the relevant clinical area.
