This priority area investigates ethical assumptions, questions and conundrums that arise in conflict and peace research, and practice, both within and outside the academia. Within academia, this priority area is interested in how ethical clearance and conduct procedures interact with research on ‘vulnerable’ populations or in fragile states. It is interested in the management of criticality, relationships and risk among project researchers involved in cross-national research projects. It also engages with ethical debates on institutional and academic autonomy, academic freedom and freedom of speech in conflict-affected contexts. Outside of the university, this priority area foregrounds the complex dilemmas that can be faced by humanitarians, negotiators, and other practitioners working in conflict and peace settings. This can include the challenges that are posed by artificial intelligence. In examining these themes, the priority area seeks to advance research and practice on responsible, inclusive, and reflexive practices.
